A dental oral exam is a comprehensive assessment of the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth. It can be used to identify specific issues in one particular area of the mouth, such as: Pain Swelling Broken teeth Other dental problems A comprehensive oral exam is recommended every 3-5 years or at the first visit to a new dental office. It includes: A review of your overall medical health A close look at your teeth, gums, and bite A complete assessment and documentation of all hard and soft, intraoral, and extraoral tissues A visual and digital examination of lymph nodes throughout the face and neck Your dentist may also take dental x-rays to show problems such as: Cavities under existing fillings Fractures Impacted wisdom teeth Decay under the gum line Bone loss
